Synopsis

In Chen Dian, China's bra manufacturing hub, an anonymous love poem becomes the talk of a lingerie factory, unearthing hidden emotions in 19-year-old worker Huang Fei. As whispers and suspicions swirl around him, Huang Fei finds his fate unexpectedly intertwined with that of a runaway pelican from the zoo. Both are out of place and under relentless scrutiny. To protect his secret, Huang Fei must take bold steps.

Director's Note

In Chen Dian, Guangdong—known as the "Hometown of Women's Lingerie"—many young men in their early twenties are employed in lingerie manufacturing. Through a narrative rich in gender contrasts, I aim to explore the journey of an individual who feels out of place within a collective environment—a progression from silent endurance to resistance, and ultimately, forced compromise and assimilation.

In the film, "poetry" symbolizes the individual's vitality, particularly in grappling with issues of identity and intimacy, which are inherently complex and fluid. In contrast, the "factory" embodies a rigid system saturated with the male gaze and a narrow definition of masculinity, representing an unchallengeable authority and societal behavioral norms. Within this inflexible structure, everyone becomes a victim. To avoid isolation and seek acceptance, individuals are compelled to conform, thereby reinforcing the system's rigidity.
