Synopsis
On a bitter winter night in Harbin, a boy loses his beloved cards. To ease his anger, he turns to mischief as a form of rebellion. But as each act of defiance gives way to the relentless return of violence—like the unending winter wind—he begins to realize he is caught in a cycle he cannot escape.

Director's Note
“If a child draws a single sun, he may be ordinary. But if he fills the page with ten suns, perhaps his inner world has already begun to distort.” This thought captures the essence of Kleptomania:distortion. The boy in the film has lost faith in his surroundings and sees the world as a creature devouring itself. After repeated frustrations and collisions with reality, he finally hands his grandfather a drawing—of a prehistoric bird consuming its own kind—during a birthday dinner. The image is not a gift but a declaration of despair: his truth about existence. The grandfather stares in silence, unable to respond. His numbness is not just personal; it echoes the paralysis shared by countless others shaped by a decaying environment.

Qu Jingkai
Qu Jingkai, born in 2000 in Inner Mongolia, graduated from the Beijing Film Academy. Driven by a curiosity for the world, he weaves his travel experiences into his filmmaking. He is currently working on an experimental documentary tracing the mysteries of shamanism in South America, while also developing a feature-length narrative inspired by the raw, intimate textures of real-life love. Kleptomania was completed as his undergraduate thesis film.
