Director’s Statement
Growing up, I've always had a good relationship with my parents, especially my mom, who seems a bit heartless to outsiders. I'm not like that. I overthink, and I tend to be hesitant and anxious about everything.
My mom hates seeing me gloomy, and she'd always say, "You're doing just fine!” I've heard this since I was a kid, but I've always brushed it off, thinking it was easy for her to say.
Later, as I grew older and began to experience society, I gradually understood: if I, at my age, had to face many things that went against my will, how could my mother, as a woman, have had it any easier in those turbulent times? She must have been like so many women over the past four or five decades: life constantly threw hurdles at them, and they could only keep running and fighting their way through, navigating the obstacles and overcoming dangers in their own ways.
Women's strength isn't the forceful strength of steel. They're more like rubber bands, capable of handling life's tugs with ease. No matter how hard they're stretched, they maintain an unwavering love and tolerance. Their endurance of pain is astonishing.
And my film features such a woman:
Unlike most women of that era, our main character Dongyu firmly grasped the initiative, bravely choosing and embracing every decisions she made. She brings this energy to every difficult situation and every relationship in life, including, of course, her own love life.
I hope we can all love bravely like Dongyu! No matter at what stage of life, her heart is always filled with the courage and hope to try again.
She came, loved, cried, and laughed.
She took some with her, and left much behind.
