Synopsis

Z is convinced he lives in a simulation, and that everyone around him is virtual—making him the loneliest person alive. One day, he meets Xiaoyi, who tries to convince him the world is real. An epic love story unfolds, challenging the very fabric of reality and destiny.

Director's Note

I’ve long been fascinated by the dual nature of the internet: it brings distant people together, yet alienates those who are close by. One end of a fiber optic cable opens to the entire world; at the other, a solitary person sits in a dim room, silhouetted by a screen.

Inspired by this interplay of loneliness and technology, a character began to take shape in my mind: someone who believes the entire world is a simulation. To him, everyone else is merely an NPC—non-player characters, part of the computer program; this makes him the only real person in the world. He is, as Paul Schrader described Travis Bickle, “God’s lonely man.”

But as I kept thinking about him, the (secret) optimist in me wondered: what if he met someone he initially dismissed as artificial, only to gradually—as their relationship deepens—begin to believe she might be real?

He searches for meaning in a world he believes to be meaningless, and ultimately finds it through an unexpected connection. Through their relationship, we explore the blurred lines between reality and perception, the weight of isolation, and the redemptive possibility of love.
