Synopsis
The Deer of Nine Colors is a Buddhist sci-fi film that follows a Thai trans woman who retraces her past life as a wild deer in order to find her true name. When she finds the courage to name herself, she transforms into the Nine-Colored Deer and attains true bliss.
Director's Note
The inspiration for The Deer of Nine Colors emerged from my research into religious syncretism and Thailand's vanishing wildlife. I became captivated by the story of the Schomburgk’s deer—an extinct local species that has become a haunting symbol of ecological erasure and urban encroachment. This led me to the ancient Buddhist Jataka tale of the "Nine-Colored Deer," famously depicted in the Mogao Caves.
To me, the deer is more than a myth; it is a symbol of divine justice and nature’s resilience. As a queer Chinese diasporic artist, I am driven to interweave LGBTQ narratives with Asian folklore, reframing traditional myths through a futuristic lens. By blending animism, technology, and reincarnation, this film reimagines an ancient tale as a modern myth. It is a story about a woman who discovers that even the hunted can attain divinity, and that the act of naming oneself is the ultimate gesture of freedom.
