Synopsis

Wang Miaomiao has never won first place. No matter what everyone is doing, she is never the best or the strongest. Until one day, her teacher announces a very special competition… Will she finally win the first place she has longed for?

Director's Note

I’ve been the slowest eater since I was a child, and I always feel tense during group activities because I’m never the strongest, fastest, or best kid. But competitiveness is, on one hand, written into our genes, and on the other, increasingly amplified by today’s meritocratic culture. Yet only a few can ever be number one—most of us may not even rank in the top ten. So how should we face our situation? How do we come to terms with a self that may be destined for ordinariness?
